Understanding the School Options in the Algarve

Families relocating to the Algarve typically have three categories of school to consider. The right choice depends on a combination of your child's age, existing language skills, how long you plan to be in Portugal, your budget, and where in the Algarve you are settling.

Public Portuguese Schools (Escolas Públicas)

Free of charge and taught entirely in Portuguese, public schools are the right choice for families integrating fully into Portuguese society, particularly for younger children who pick up languages quickly. Quality varies by school and area. We advise on which public schools have the strongest reputations in your specific location and assist with the enrolment process, which requires your NIF and proof of address.

Bilingual Schools

A mid-point option combining Portuguese curriculum with English-medium instruction for some subjects. Fees are lower than fully international schools but higher than public education. These schools are often a good fit for families planning a long-term stay who want their children to develop Portuguese language skills while maintaining English proficiency.

International Schools

The Algarve has several reputable international schools offering British curriculum, International Baccalaureate and other programmes entirely in English. These are the clearest choice for families who may return to their home country, for older children for whom Portuguese immersion would be academically disruptive, or for families prioritising continuity of curriculum. Fees typically range from €8,000 to €18,000 per year. Waiting lists at popular schools can be significant — we advise on current availability.

Childcare and Preschool Options

For younger children, the Algarve has public creches and jardins de infância (nursery/kindergarten) as well as private nurseries and international preschools. Public provision is subsidised based on family income. Private preschools range from basic to premium, and international preschools with English-medium care are available in the central Algarve. We assess the options for your children's ages and your location.
