FAQ

Questions we hear
every day.

Absolutely — a significant part of our work is with people already resident in the Algarve who still have things to sort out. You do not need to be new to Portugal to need help with Portuguese bureaucracy.

The most common requests from existing residents:

Driving Licence Exchange — mandatory after 185 days of residency. Many people put this off and then need it urgently.

Insurance — health, home, car or life. As a licensed broker we access all major Portuguese and international insurers.

CMD (Chave Móvel Digital) — Portugal's digital identity key for online access to tax, health and immigration portals.

SNS Registration — if you have not yet registered with your local health centre.

Car Registration — importing a vehicle or registering a purchase in Portugal.

Will and Succession — particularly important for property owners.

Document Renewals — residency cards, NIF updates, address changes.

Just book a free call and tell Carlos what you need — no obligation, no minimum commitment. Common day-to-day requests include selling or buying a car, dealing with utility disputes, renewing documents, sorting out tax situations, and navigating any issue where Portuguese bureaucracy stands in the way.
Our services are priced individually or as packages, depending on what you need.

Individual services start from €80 (translation) up to from €900 for a full visa application. Common entry points: NIF Registration €180 · Bank Account €180 · NIF + Bank bundle €300 · SNS Healthcare €120.

Packages bundle the most common combinations: Essentials (NIF + Bank + SNS) from €450 · Full Setup (visa + all registrations + utilities) from €1,800 · Ongoing Concierge from €300/month.

Insurance is completely free — as a licensed broker, Carlos earns a commission from the insurer, so there is no cost to you for advice or arrangement.

All government fees (AIMA, IMT, etc.) are separate and always communicated in advance before you commit to anything.

The free consultation is the best starting point — Carlos will assess your exact situation and give you a clear picture of what you need and what it costs, with no obligation to proceed.
Not at all. Most of the initial steps — NIF registration, bank account opening, visa preparation — can be done remotely. Many clients start the process from their home country and arrive in Portugal with everything already in place.
The NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is your Portuguese tax number. You need it for almost everything — opening a bank account, renting or buying property, signing contracts, registering a car, and applying for residency. It's the first thing to get, and we make it fast and straightforward.
Portugal offers several visa routes depending on your nationality and situation. Here are the main options:

D7 — Passive Income Visa: For retirees, property owners, and anyone with regular passive income (pension, savings, dividends, rental). Requires approx. €870/month in provable income. Applied for at a Portuguese consulate before arriving.

Digital Nomad Visa: For remote workers employed by a non-Portuguese company or freelancers. Requires a minimum of €3,040/month income. One of the most popular routes for Americans, British and Northern Europeans.

D2 — Entrepreneur Visa: For those starting a business or investing in Portugal. Requires a viable business plan and supporting financials.

Golden Visa: For qualifying investments in Portugal (real estate, funds, job creation). Provides residency with minimal stay requirements. Carlos connects you with specialist lawyers for this route.

EU/EEA Citizens: No visa needed — free movement applies. You register at AIMA within 90 days of arrival to formalise your residency.

CPLP Nationals (Brazil, Angola, Cape Verde etc.): Benefit from a Treaty of Friendship — simplified residency and citizenship in just 3 years.

Not sure which applies to you? Use our Check My Path tool or book a free call with Carlos.

Note: In 2026, AIMA processing times are significantly longer than in previous years. We always give you a realistic picture of timelines from the first call.
In 2026 the honest answer is: 12 to 24 months for the full residency card is realistic, and in some cases longer. AIMA (the Portuguese immigration authority) is operating under significant backlogs with high demand for appointments and stricter documentation requirements than previous years.

What this means in practice:
— Your visa is approved at the consulate first (1–3 months) and you can live legally in Portugal during the AIMA process
— AIMA appointment availability is the main bottleneck — we monitor the system and know how to secure appointments
— Documentation must be complete and correct before any appointment — missing documents cause delays of months
— Brazilian and CPLP nationals have a slightly faster route via direct AIMA registration

Why Carlos matters more now, not less: Navigating AIMA in 2026 requires knowing the system, knowing which documents each officer will request, and knowing how to respond when things don't go to plan. This is exactly what we do every day. We will be honest with you about realistic timelines from day one.
Absolutely. Many clients come to us after arriving and realising how complex the system is. Whether you need to regularise your situation, open a bank account, register your car, or sort out your NIF — we can help at any stage of your journey.
A 30-minute call with Carlos where we assess your situation, identify exactly what you need, map out the steps and timeline, and give you a clear picture of costs — with no obligation to proceed. Most people leave the call knowing exactly what to do next.
Yes — and this is a genuine advantage of working with us. Carlos is a licensed insurance broker with access to all major Portuguese insurers as well as a network of international brokers for clients who need international coverage or expat-specific policies.

Health Insurance: Essential for visa applications and for faster access to specialists beyond the SNS. We compare Portuguese providers and international expat health plans.

Home & Contents: Whether renting or buying, we arrange cover that works for your property and situation in Portugal.

Life Insurance: Particularly important for families and property buyers. We access both Portuguese and international life products.

Motor Insurance: Required for all vehicles in Portugal. We arrange competitive cover and handle the paperwork.

Travel & Transition Cover: For the period between leaving your home country and becoming fully resident — often an overlooked gap.

Our insurance consultation is completely free — we earn a commission from the insurer, so there is no cost to you for the advice or arrangement.
Absolutely — and Brazilians have one of the best pathways to Portugal available.

Brazilian nationals benefit from the Treaty of Friendship between Brazil and Portugal — one of the most favourable residency routes for any non-EU citizen. You can apply for residency directly at AIMA in Portugal (no need to apply at a consulate in Brazil first), and can apply for Portuguese citizenship in just 3 years instead of 5.

Other CPLP nationals (Angola, Cape Verde, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé e Príncipe, Timor-Leste) also benefit from facilitated residency under the CPLP mobility agreement.

All other non-EU nationals (USA, Canada, UK, India, South Africa, Australia etc.) are served through the standard Portuguese visa routes — D7, Digital Nomad Visa, or D2 depending on their situation.

Carlos speaks Portuguese and English fluently and is well-versed in all nationality pathways. Use the free assessment tool to see your specific route.
Carlos works fluently in Portuguese, English and Spanish, and has basic French. All appointments, documents and communications are handled in a language you fully understand — nothing gets lost in translation.
