Marine Insurance Cover Types

Hull & Machinery (Casco e Máquinas)
Physical damage to the vessel: collision, grounding, storm, fire, theft, vandalism. Usually on an agreed-value basis in Portugal.

Third-Party Liability (Responsabilidade Civil)
Legally required for motorised vessels. Covers damage or injury your vessel causes to third parties, other boats and harbour infrastructure.

Personal Accident (Acidentes Pessoais)
Covers injury to the skipper and named crew. Important for offshore passages where medical evacuation could be required.

Charter & Commercial Use
If the vessel is used commercially, a standard leisure policy is void. Separate commercial marine cover and AMN licensing are required.

About boat insurance in Portugal
Third-party liability insurance is legally required for motorised vessels in Portuguese waters. Non-motorised craft are not legally required to carry insurance, though it is strongly recommended. Charter vessels require a specific commercial marine policy.
Most UK marine policies cover Portuguese and EU waters under a standard European extension. However, for boats permanently based in Portugal, a Portuguese or European market policy often provides better value and easier local claims handling. Carlos reviews your existing policy and advises on whether a switch is appropriate.
Most standard Portuguese leisure marine policies cover Portuguese coastal and inland waters, with optional extensions to the Mediterranean, North Atlantic and wider European waters. Atlantic passage and bluewater cover is available but quoted separately.
